Embroidery Against Violence / Bordando contra la Violencia

Today I wanted to begin by detailing information and statistics regarding violence in Mexico, but I believe it is better to open up the topic. This picture above, this embroidered handkerchief says; “Just because I do not see you, I do not forget you”. It speaks for itself, there’s nothing better than to shed some light on these important projects, projects that use the common activities of daily life as a means of protest. In Mexico we are at a critical moment, where even innocent crafts like embroidery have been transformed into weapons of expression with a high impact.

I’m talking about the projects such as, Embroidery For Peace and Embroidering Feminicides. It is an effective way of connecting with women, and to the public in general, with his (her, your) personal histories. It was a tradition that came from the industrious grandmothers in Mexico, now it is a source of expression for thousands that are fed up of the impunity, atrocities against women and hundreds of violent deaths because of drug trafficking; the ungovernable state in Mexico is edging to the whole world towards this conclusion, but also to towards action in those cases.

This is a precious offer, and out of it, two projects have begun already, with probably more in the future. The handkerchief is a more concrete project that tells the story of your experience, from where it hurts, to remember the people who have died. By remembering our dead people, we keep them in the collective memory. I must clarify that the project Embroidery For Peace ‘s slogan is «Embroider hope and memory». Its goal is to a considerable number of embroideries, it will appear in the public parks of the country.

This project has now spread to other countries as well, there is one “Embroidery for Peace” in Montréal for example, but also another group, a group of women interested in embroidering only Feminicides, this last group told us:

«Every woman who integrates the movement embroiders in solitary and the group joins every month and a half. We have as agreement that each one takes his embroidery to wear wherever they goes: standing at a row, in a park and the people ask, join and starts embroidering. Even they find out what is the feminicide, because many persons do not know the concept» (Interview started to the Newspaper El país for Embroidering feminicides)

Feminicide is broadly defined as the killing of women by gender, in other words, as «the killing of females by males because they are females”.

This one is my grain of sand in passing the voice, in rescuing the memory of these people who succumbed unjustly to the Violence.

Bordando contra la violencia

Hoy quería empezar por escribir datos y estadísticas sobre la violencia en México pero creo es mejor esta imagen(arriba del articulo en ingles) para abrir el tema. Este pañuelo bordado dice; Por que no te veo, no te olvido, significativo, habla por sí mismo, nada mejor que pasar la voz sobre estos proyectos que van cobrando importancia, que protestan, desde la vida diaria contra la violencia. En México estamos en un momento critico donde pasatiempos tan inocentes como bordar se han transformado en armas de expresión de alto calibre.

Hablo de los proyectos Bordando por la paz y Bordamos Feminicidios. Es una manera efectiva de poner en contacto a las mujeres, al publico en general con sus historias personales. Fue una tradición de abuelas hacendosas en México, ahora es fuente de expresión de miles que están hartos de la impunidad, feminicidios atroces y cientos de muertes violentas a causa del Narcotráfico; el estado de ingobernabilidad en México esta orillando a todo el mundo a la reflexión, pero también a la acción.

Esta es una propuesta preciosa, hizo nacer dos proyectos, quizá mas en el futuro, un pañuelo es un algo concreto que habla de tu experiencia, de donde duele, de recordar quién murió, de y sobre todo de mantener a nuestros muert@s, muert@s que viven en la memoria. Debo aclarar el proyecto bordemos por la paz tenía por objetivo,“bordar esperanza y memoria”. Y Una vez logrado un número considerable de bordados, se mostrarába en las plazas públicas del país. Este proyecto creció hasta otros países, hay un bordemos por la paz en Montréal por ejemplo, pero también hizo que otro grupo de mujeres se interesará en bordar solo feminicidios, nos dice este ultimo grupo:

         “Cada mujer que integra el movimiento borda en solitario y el grupo se junta cada mes y medio. Tenemos como acuerdo que cada una lleva su bordado a donde va: una fila, una banca, un parque y la gente pregunta, se une y empieza a bordar. Incluso se enteran de lo que es el feminicidio, porque muchas personas desconocen el concepto” (Entrevista dada al Periódico el País por Bordamos feminicidios)
Feminicidio recordemos es un neologismo creado a través de la traducción del vocablo inglés femicide y se refiere al asesinato evitable de mujeres por razones de género. Es un asesinato contra mujeres por el solo hecho de ser mujer.
Este es mi granito de arena, pasando la voz, para tratar de rescatar la memoria de esa gente que sucumbió injustamente a la Violencia.
